Implementation, Adoption, and Scaling Workgroup

How do we advance the adoption and use of safe and effective patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS)? The Implementation, Adoption, and Scaling Workgroup (formerly the Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination Workgroup) is addressing this question by identifying barriers and opportunities for scalable implementation and adoption of PC CDS, and developing resources to facilitate uptake.

Group of professionals working together at a conference tableWhile progress has been made in creating infrastructure to enable implementation of PC CDS at scale, to date, uptake of CDS has been modest. Advancing PC CDS within our healthcare systems requires the adoption of proven, evidence-based PC CDS tools at scale. In the first two years of the CDSiC, the Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination Workgroup was tasked with exploring this issue as well as process measurement of PC CDS.

The renamed Implementation, Adoption, and Scaling Workgroup is now addressing this need by identifying barriers, opportunities, and resources to achieving PC CDS at scale and developing products that reduce barriers, capitalize on opportunities, and provide pragmatic resources for PC CDS stakeholders. Through this work, this Workgroup will serve as a champion for scaling safe and effective CDS tools beyond one-off settings. The reports, resources, and tools created by this Workgroup consider factors such as challenges in the adoption of PC CDS in diverse settings, how PC CDS tools can be designed with scalability in mind, and best practices for scaling PC CDS grounded in real-world solutions. Ultimately, the Workgroup helps advance the clinical use of PC CDS to deliver evidence-based, high-quality care that is responsive to the needs and preferences of patients. Through Fall of 2024, the Workgroup will be focusing efforts on:

  • Conducting a landscape assessment on the use of artificial intelligence to scale PC CDS.
  • Developing case studies on PC CDS implementation challenges and solutions by gathering lessons learned from real-world implementations.
  • Cataloging opportunities and approaches for PC CDS to provide a favorable return on investment to demonstrate its value to healthcare organizations and patients.
