How do we advance the implementation and use of patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) and ensure that we have the right measures to track this? The Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination Workgroup is addressing this question by identifying and/or developing measures of PC CDS adoption, implementation, and use.
While CDS tools help clinicians with decision making, to date, uptake of CDS has been modest. Advancing PC CDS within our healthcare systems requires measures to determine if CDS tools are working as intended and are improving healthcare delivery processes. The Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination Workgroup is addressing this need by identifying measures of PC CDS adoption, implementation, and use. In identifying these measures, this Workgroup will serve as a champion for scaling safe and effective CDS tools beyond one-off settings. The reports, resources, and tools created by this Workgroup consider factors such as how CDS affects the way clinicians spend their time at work and how well PC CDS tools capture patient preferences. Ultimately, the Workgroup helps demonstrate the value of CDS in delivering evidence-based, high-quality care that is responsive to the needs and preferences of patients. Through Fall of 2023, the Workgroup will be focusing efforts on:
- Outlining a standard approach for describing how PC CDS interventions are designed, developed, deployed, used, maintained, and evaluated.
- Compiling a catalog of approaches used to measure the effects of PC CDS interventions on clinician workflows and patient activities, or “life flows.”
- Developing recommendations on strategies and measures for evaluating the performance and value of PC CDS interventions.
