Resources

The Clinical Decision Support Innovation Collaborative (CDSiC) aims to produce resources to advance the development of patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) tools that can help patients make informed decisions with their care teams that align with their specific needs, preferences, and values.

The CDSiC provides information and resources for patients, researchers, developers, and clinicians. Examples of resources found here include PC CDS vignettes, infographics, peer-reviewed articles, literature scans, frameworks, and other tools.

This report describes standards for patient-preferences data.  Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC Standards and Regulatory Frameworks Workgroup, this report examines data standards currently available for collecting and using patient-preference data to guide patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) and includes recommendations to further the integration of patient-preference data into PC CDS tools.

Publication Date:
This user guide identifies available measures to assess patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS).  Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination of CDS Workgroup, this user guide describes how the measures included in the PC CDS Performance Measurement Inventory are organized, provides user scenarios that serve as illustrative examples for how performance measures can be selected and used, and contains a brief discussion of measure gaps within patient-centered clinical decision support.

This inventory identifies available measures and metrics to assess patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) performance.  Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination of CDS Workgroup, this inventory can be used by implementation teams with the accompanying resource, the Scaling, Measurement, and Dissemination of CDS Workgroup: PC CDS Performance Measurement Inventory User Guide

This report provides a framework for the use of patient-centered clinical decision support to facilitate shared decision making. Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC Outcomes and Objectives Workgroup, this report provides a framework demonstrating the potential for patient-centered clinical decision support to facilitate shared decision making.

Publication Date:
This handbook provides guidance and resources for patient engagement in patient-centered clinical decision support. Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC Trust and Patient-Centeredness Workgroup, this handbook provides guidance on the best methods to engage patients in the development of patient-centered clinical decision support tools.

Publication Date:
This report offers measures to evaluate patient-centered clinical decision support impact on patient-focused outcomes. Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC Outcomes and Objectives Workgroup, this report aims to address the extent to which patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) improves care delivery by identifying relevant outcome measures deemed most important by patients.

From the AHRQ CDSiC Innovation Center, this article published in Applied Clinical Informatics (ACI) shares findings from a scoping review of studies of patient-generated health data (PGHD) dashboards that involved clinician users in design or evaluations. The objective of the research was to identify best practices in visualizations of physiologic PGHD to design a software application as a patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) tool. The authors found themes around PGHD dashboard user preference in terms of presentation and use and concluded that more information is needed as PGHD usage grows. Click here to read the article. In this report, the CDSiC presents an overview of the activities, outputs, and outcomes of the first two years of the CDSiC and summarizes lessons learned. The intended audiences for this report are clinicians, CDS researchers, CDS content developers, electronic health record (EHR) developers, app developers, device and wearable manufacturers, health information technology (IT) standards developers, policymakers, patients/caregivers, and payers. Click here to read the report. Key achievements during the first two years of the CDSiC include: The team engaged over 100 CDS stakeholders in discussions on the current state and future promise of PC CDS. The CDSiC convened and sustained the CDSiC’s 26-member Steering Committee, four Workgroups comprising 49 stakeholders who represent diverse experiences and viewpoints, and two Innovation Center Cores that pushed the current limits of PC CDS to develop new concepts and technologies. The team synthesized over 1,200 peer-reviewed and grey literature resources; engaged 93 experts through key informant interviews, focus groups, and technical expert panels; and developed over 30 resources for the CDS community that provide concrete recommendations and guidance for advancing the scalability, quality, and effectiveness of PC CDS. The CDSiC disseminated PC CDS resources and CDSiC outputs through various channels, including scientific journals, conference presentations, newsletters, viewpoint pieces, and the CDSiC website.
