Despite the significant link between patient experience and healthcare quality, few measures adequately capture patients’ experiences with PC CDS. Further, there is no nationally representative survey data on clinical and patient-focused outcomes related to the use of PC CDS. This report addresses these gaps by identifying key domains that can be used to measure patients’ experiences with PC CDS and creating a bank of patient-informed survey questions. The survey questions support the standardized collection of patient-centered data and advance the field of PC CDS measurement.
About the Report
The report highlights several patient experience domains relevant to PC CDS, which were identified through a targeted literature search and prioritized by stakeholders who participated in key informant interviews. These findings informed the development of survey questions aligned with the priority domains, which were then further refined through cognitive testing sessions with patient advocates.
The final question bank provides 41 questions:
- Nine screening questions seek to understand the respondent’s use of PC CDS.
- Eighteen questions probe patient experience with PC CDS, corresponding to high-priority domains: self-management support, communication with clinicians, shared decision making, getting information, and usability.
- Twelve questions probe cross-cutting outcomes of PC CDS as it relates to patient experience.
- One question designed for patients who have not used PC CDS asks about their willingness to try PC CDS in the future.
- One question for all patients asks about their willingness to try AI-supported healthcare tools in the future.
How To Use This Report
PC CDS researchers and evaluators can use this report as a resource to support the large-scale assessment of patients’ experiences with PC CDS across care settings and geographical locations. By collecting valuable data on the current state of PC CDS nationwide, stakeholders can strengthen PC CDS and ensure its alignment with patients’ preferences and goals.
