Patient engagement is essential to high-quality healthcare and can empower patients and caregivers to actively participate in treatment decisions. Patient engagement can take different forms throughout the PC CDS lifecycle, from patients participating in research and clinical guideline development to actively codesigning and using PC CDS tools in their care. However, the measurement of patient engagement in PC CDS remains limited, hindering efforts to identify meaningful involvement best practices. To support better measurement, this report identifies measures that assess patient engagement across the PC CDS lifecycle.
About the Report
The report provides a detailed inventory of PC CDS-relevant patient engagement measures which were identified through a targeted literature review and validated with key informant interviews. The inventory is organized into three parts that represent different levels where patients can be engaged as contributors, collaborators, partners, and/or end users in the PC CDS lifecycle:
- Phases: The broad stages of the PC CDS lifecycle—Knowledge Generation, CDS, and Healthcare Delivery.
- Steps: The key points within each phase where patients can be engaged.
- Activities: The specific activities patients engage in within each step.
The report also shares a corresponding framework, which inventory users can review to understand how patient engagement occurs throughout the lifecycle and ultimately contributes to improvements in important end goals in healthcare delivery.
How To Use This Report
PC CDS researchers and evaluators can use this report as a resource to guide the meaningful assessment of patient engagement in PC CDS, as well as the development of new measurement approaches. By applying the framework and inventory, stakeholders can more effectively integrate patient voices and fully realize the benefits of PC CDS.
