PAIGE
PAIGE Chatbot for Patient-Clinician Communication: Usability and Utility Assessment

This report assesses the future use of a patient-facing large language model-powered PC CDS prototype that seeks to streamline patient-provider communication.

Large language model (LLM) tools can potentially reduce back-and-forth messaging to respond to patient questions more efficiently. The AHRQ Clinical Decision Support Innovation Collaborative Innovation Center Core 2 designed and developed a patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) prototype known as PAIGE that leverages an LLM to improve and streamline patient-clinician communication on the patient portal.

About the Report
This report presents patients’ and clinicians’ perspectives on the future usability and utility of the PAIGE prototype to better understand the capability of LLMs to facilitate accurate and timely clinical communication.

How To Use This Report
The report is intended for patients, clinicians, PC CDS developers, informaticians, or anyone interested in how to design and use AI-based PC CDS in health care settings with patients’ and clinicians’ interests in mind.
